Hot Spots in Dogs
The heat of summer seems to bring with it hot spots in dogs. What are hot spots? They are red, inflamed, moist areas that pop up quickly on dogs and get infected when they itch and lick at them. Also known as moist dermatitis, these inflammatory skin lesions can be caused by allergies, bug bites or anything that makes the dogs itch. They seem to show up more when the weather is hot and humid.
So, how do you treat them? First, try to find a cause. Did you recently switch the diet? Does your dog have fleas? You can work on fixing that. Read about a natural flea treatments here and here. Read about why I don’t like dry food diets here.
To treat the hot spots themselves, I recommend my PawromaTherapy products for them.
Healing Gel for Dogs, is a wonderful aloe-based product with essential oils that not only soothes the inflamed skin but also treats the infection.
My Herbal Hot Spot Spray is a similar formula in a spray form with less essential oils and some added Chinese herbs to help a little more with infection. This formula is a good choice for sensitive pets and is safe for cats.
Both formulas work great. I prefer the Healing Gel because it stays on longer, so that is usually my first choice, unless the areas are larger and more spread out, then the Hot Spot Spray might be a better choice.
