Probiotics for Pets
Probiotics for Pets
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria and yeast that live in the gastrointestinal tract and help with digestion.
In addition to helping with digestion, probiotics can also help:
modulate the immune system
treat food allergies
help with mood and anxiety
resolve diarrhea and constipation
inhibit harmful bacteria and yeast overgrowth
Food sources of probiotics that are safe to give dogs and cats are plain yogurt, kefir, cultured coconut milk, cultured goat milk, and fermented vegetables such as cabbage (sauerkraut), beets and zucchini. Start with a small amount, added to their food, such as a teaspoon and increase to a tablespoon or more as needed if your pet likes it.
Supplements are also a great way to add probiotics to your pets diet. They tend to be more concentrated and have a wider range of different types of bacteria.
