Epsom Salt for Dogs and Cats

Epsom salt is a naturally occurring mineral compound that is made up of magnesium and sulfate. It has been used for centuries for its many health benefits, both for humans and animals.

For pets, Epsom salt can be used topically to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Red, Itchy skin: Epsom salt can help to soothe irritated skin. It can also help to remove dead skin cells and promote new cell growth.

  • Itchy Paws (Interdigital Dermatitis): Epsom salt soaks can help to treat mild infection and heal itchy paws.

  • Muscle soreness: Epsom salt baths can help to relax muscles and reduce inflammation. They can be especially beneficial for dogs that are active or that have arthritis.

  • Wounds: Epsom salt can help to clean and heal wounds. It can also help to reduce pain and swelling. It is especially useful for abscesses in cats.

  • Fleas and ticks: Epsom salt can be used to make a natural flea and tick repellent. It can also be used to treat an existing infestation and help with irritated skin.

  • Stress and anxiety: Epsom salt baths can help to relax and calm dogs that are stressed or anxious. They can also help to improve sleep quality.

To give your dog an Epsom salt bath, simply add 1 cup of Epsom salt to a bathtub filled with warm water. Let your dog soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with clean water. Be sure to dry your dog thoroughly after the bath.

For cats, you can use about 2 teaspoons in a bowl of warm water. You can either soak the affected area or make a compress with a wash cloth soaked in the epsom salt solution.

Here are some additional tips for giving your dog an Epsom salt bath:

  • Use lukewarm water. Hot water can irritate your dog's skin.

  • Add a few drops of essential oil to the bathwater for added benefits. Some essential oils that are safe for dogs include lavender, chamomile, eucalyptus and peppermint. See my article on How to Safely Use Essential Oils in Pets

  • Monitor your dog during the bath and make sure they are comfortable. If they seem uncomfortable, end the bath early.

If you are looking for a natural way to help your pet with a variety of conditions, consider giving them an Epsom salt bath.
